Gokayama: a quieter World Heritage than Shirakawa-go
Everyone knows Shirakawa-go, but few cross to the other side of the mountains. Gokayama is the same gassho-zukuri World Heritage — yet it keeps what Shirakawa-go is losing: quiet. Its two small hamlets, Ainokura and Suganuma, are still lived in, with cooking smoke, rice paddies, and thatched roofs blending into a postcard with no tourists in it.
Why it counts as "hidden"
Gokayama takes an extra bus ride from the nearest station, and that small hurdle keeps the big tour groups away. Without the noise of a souvenir street, you can actually hear the wind through the thatch. For anyone who wants the gassho-zukuri culture without the crush, it's the better choice.

Start at Ainokura and climb the viewpoint behind the hamlet for the full panorama, then make your way slowly to Suganuma. If time allows, stay a night in a gassho-zukuri guesthouse — after dark there are no tourists, just insect song and stars. That's the real Gokayama.
